Wan is Alibaba's text- and image-to-video family, and its calling card is one most generators fumble: legible on-screen Chinese and English text. For short drama that is quietly important — storefront signs, phone screens and title cards appear constantly in vertical serials. Our read is that Wan's open-weights lineage also makes it the rare option a studio can self-host once episode volume makes per-clip pricing painful.

Against Kling, Wan trades the polish of a managed consumer app for flexibility: the official site is sparse, and much of the ecosystem lives in community workflows and cloud APIs rather than a friendly storyboard UI. Hunyuan Video is the closer sibling — both are open Chinese models — but Wan's text rendering gives it the edge for dialogue-heavy micro-drama frames. Expect to invest setup time before it pays off.
